The JDS Program is to provide nationalities of Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Uzbekistan and Vietnam with opportunities for academic research at Japanese higher educational institutions under the Grant Aid assistance by Government of Japan. The objective of this program is to support the respective Government in its efforts to facilitate its own plans for human resource development mainly for capacity building and institutional building, and thereby extend and enhance the bilateral relationship with Japan.
The JDS Program targets young government officers for public sector, researchers, business people and others with the potential to play leadership roles in their specialties after return to each country as well as to become leaders in their homeland in the 21st century.
This Program is implemented by the related Ministry of the respective countries, Government of Japan and JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency). These JDS fellows have been sent to Japanese higher educational institutions to study the following subjects, depending on the targeted countries:

[Japan] Asian Youth Fellowship

The Japan Foundation offers scholarship to study the Japanese language for Asian students, who wish to study at graduate schools in Japan and have a strong wish to contribute to regional cooperation after obtaining a Master or Ph. D Degree.
1. Features of the Asian Youth Fellowship Program
The scholarship grantees shall take a preparatory course in the Japanese language and other subjects for approximately 7 months at the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai , situated in Osaka, Japan. Grantees shall live in the provided dormitory through the Program.
Grantees will thereafter be matriculated into Japanese universities as Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students (Research Student or regular course students) from April 2007.
2. Field of Study
We welcome students wishing to studying in the fields of: Humanities and Social Sciences in principle, such as History, Archaeology, Law, Politics, Economics, Commerce, Education, Sociology, etc. Students majoring in study fields of Engineering and Natural Sciences are also encouraged to apply.
* Fields of study must be one of those available at Japanese universities. Practical training given by factories or companies is excluded.
* Japanese Studies or Japanese Culture Studies are not fit for the purpose of this Program.
3. Qualifications
(1) Nationality:
Applicants must be nationals of one of the following countries; Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam.
(2) Age:
Applicants must be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2007 (i.e. born on or after April 2, 1972)
(3) Academic Backgrounds:
Applicants must be university or college graduates, who have completed the fundamental education of their countries, basically of 16 years (those who will graduate from a university or college by the Registration Day of AYF may apply).
(4) Study Area:
The study area must be in the same field as the applicant has studied (or is now studying) or a related one.
(5) Others:
a. Applicants should not have Japanese language proficiency. Those who have learned Japanese language and already acquired Japanese proficiency comparable to the Japanese Proficiency Test Level 3 are excluded.
b. Good proficiency in English is required.
c. Military men and military civilian employees registered on the personnel list are excluded.
d. Applicants should be in good health.
e. The grants may be canceled if grantees fail to arrive in Osaka, Japan, by the Registration Day of AYF, 2006.
f. The applicant whose spouse has already won a Japanese Government scholarship will not be selected as a grantee, and likewise in the case of a couple applying at the same time.
g. The applicant who has been awarded a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship in the past will not be selected as a grantee unless he/she has had a few years' research or teaching experience after returning to his/her country.
h. It is not recommended for his/her family to accompany the applicant to Japan during the AYF program.
4. Terms of Scholarship
The scholarship will be granted for a period of about 7 months, in principle, from the date of arrival in Osaka to March 2007. After completing the AYF Program, the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship will be granted according to its own regulation.
5. Scholarship Benefits during Preparatory Course
(1) Allowance:
1000 yen per day will be given to each grantee, in addition to the supply of accommodations during the preparatory course in Osaka, Japan. All meals will be provided by AYF.
(2) Transportation:
a. Transportation to Osaka
The grantee will be supplied with a economy class air ticket from the international airport nearest to his/her home address to Osaka.
b. Completion of the AYF preparatory course and coming to Japan
The grantee will first return to his/her home country after the completion of the 7 months preparatory course in Osaka, Japan. An economy class air ticket for this trip will be supplied by AYF. For a trip from his/her home country to Japan, the transportation will be arranged by the Embassy of Japan in his/her country, according to the itinerary of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship. Transportation..
(3) School Fees:
Fees for the preliminary training in Osaka and the entrance examination of Japanese universities will be exempted.
(4) Accommodations:
Each grantee will be allocated a room in the dormitory arranged for the grantees near the Preparatory Course Center in Osaka Accommodations
(5) Medical fee:
The grantees will be covered by insurance for accidents, illness and injuries by AYF during their stay in Osaka, Japan (from the date of arrival through March 2007).
* After completing the AYF Program, grantees will proceed to Japanese universities as Monbukagakusho Scholarship students. Allowances, accommodations, and other status are subject to Monbukagakusho’s regulations.
6. Selection
(1) Japanese diplomatic missions concerned will select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of a review of the documents submitted, in cooperation with the foreign governments concerned.
(2) Those who have been selected as the preliminary candidates will be recommended to Asian Youth Fellowship Screening Committee, Tokyo, Japan. The Committee will select grantees from among the preliminary candidates by means of an interview made in their respective countries by a mission member assigned and dispatched by the Committee.
(3) Final announcement will be provided by the Embassy of Japan in writing after Monbukagakusho’s approval to the decision by the AYF Screening Committee. The grantees of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship for 2007 will be finally selected after the university placement has been made, provided they have passed the final examination of AYF.
AYF will provide the students with information on Japanese universities through the Program.
7. Application Procedure
Applicants must submit the following documents according to the instruction given by the Embassy of Japan in their own country by the date appointed. The documents submitted will not be returned.
8. Notes
(1) Information on this scholarship program is available at the Embassy of Japan
(2) A grantee will be deprived of his/her scholarship in any of the following cases;
a. A false statement has been made on his/her application dossier.
b. He/she violates any article of his/her pledge.
c. He/she has been subject to disciplinary action by the Asian Youth Fellowship or has no prospect for academic achievement (e.g. failure to achieve a satisfactory level in the Japanese language).
(3) After finishing the preparatory course in Osaka, the grantee will be studying in Japan as a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship grantee. It is therefore recommended that the applicant should read the guideline to the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship.

[Australia] The Australian Partnership Scholarships (APS) Program

APS is an initiative from the Australian Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development and is funded by the Australian Government for postgraduate study in Australian universities.
APS is a different scholarship program to the Australian Development Scholarship program (ADS). The objective of the scholarship program is to increase the human resource capacity of Indonesia in the areas of Economic Governance, Public Sector Management and Education.
The scholarship program is an important component of the on-going development cooperation between Indonesia and Australia. After the earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and North Sumatera, the Australian Government has increased its commitment to supporting development in Indonesia.
The Australian Partnership Scholarships Program funds Indonesians for higher degree study in Australia through a joint selection process overseen by the Government of Australia and the Government of Indonesia and consistent with mutually agreed general policy objectives.
The APS Program is managed through an established APS Project Office in Jakarta, to ensure efficient and effective administration of the program.

[Global] Asian Public Intellectuals (API) Fellowships

The Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals (API Fellowships) are open to academics, mass media professionals, artists, NGO/NPO leaders, and others with moral authority who are working to shape public opinion and influence policy in their societies.
The API Fellowships enable public intellectuals in Asia to pursue intellectual, cultural and professional projects in another Asian country according to one of three predetermined themes.
The API Fellowships are fully funded by The Nippon Foundation.
For the Fellowship period 2006 - 2007, the participating countries are Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. An International Selection Committee is responsible for the final selection of the candidates recommended by the respective Country Selection Committees.
The API Executive Committee oversees the running of the API Fellowships in consultation with the Nippon Foundation.
The Regional Coordinating Institution, responsible for the regional management of the API Fellowships, is the Institute of Asian Studies Chulalongkorn University, Thailand.

The IDB Merit Scholarship Programme aims at developing technically qualified human resources to undertake advanced studies and/or research in the fields of applied science and technology needed for the development of the IDB member countries.
1. Introduction
The IDB Merit Scholarship Programme aims at developing technically qualified human resources in the IDB member countries by providing scholarships to promising and/or outstanding scholars and researchers to undertake advanced studies and/or research in the fields of applied science and technology needed for the development of the member countries.
The main objectives of this programme are:
* To develop technically qualified human resources in the IDB member countries;
* To enhance the scientific, technological and research capability and potential of scholars and researchers in IDB member countries;
* To help meet the needs of the IDB member countries in areas of science and technology; and
* To strengthen the scientific, technological and research capability of institutions in member countries.
As of Dhul Hijja 1424H (February 2004), a total of 244 scholars have been selected, benefiting 44 countries and 173 of their institutions. A total of 134 scholars (58 Ph.Ds and 76 Post-Doctorals) have completed their studies and return to their respective countries to fulfil the aim and objective of the Programme.
2. Scope & Fields of Study
The Programme covers two types of studies/research: three-year Ph.D study and one-year Post-Doctoral research. The duration of study of three years or 36 months for Ph.D study and 3 – 6 months for Post-Doctoral research is fixed and not extendable.
The currently approved fields of study are as follows:

The list of internationally renowned institutions of study offering the areas of study covered under the Programme is available at the Offices of the IDB Governors for the member countries, the designated focal/contact points for the Programme and the Office of the Scholarship Programme, IDB.
However, since admission is not mandatory during the application process and the choice of school is not open for approval until the candidates have been selected, seeing the list of institutions of study is not necessary for an interested applicant when applying for the Programme.
In general, the institutions that are acceptable under the Programme are those renowned ones in the scientifically and technologically advanced industrial countries of the world (North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australia, etc), emerging High-Tech Asian countries and centres of excellence in IDB member countries. However, on an exceptional circumstance and on a case-by-case basis, institutions of study from other developing countries may be considered if their superiority in specific areas of study can be substantiated (based on research/teaching staff, faculties and facilities) as being the best in the fields of study proposed by the candidates.
4. Schedule of Activities
The Programme is announced between February and March every year (after the final selection of the previous year has been completed) through the Offices of the Governors of the IDB. The Programme activities are scheduled as follows:

The French Government, through the Embassy of France in Jakarta, has been providing excellence scholarships to Indonesian citizens for more than 25 years.
In order to pursue its objective to improve Indonesian human resources, the Embassy of France will offer 15 scholarships for the year 2006.
These scholarships are given to government officials, lecturers, students (with a priority to those involved in a cooperation program between France and Indonesia) to undertake three kinds of training :
-Master degree (maximum duration of 2 years)
-Doctoral degree (maximum duration of 3 years,only on a shared cost basis)
-Post-Doctoral program (maximum duration of 6 months, only on a shared cost basis)
Requirements:
Applicants must fulfill the following requirements :

[Swiss] Scholarship for Indonesian Citizens

The Swiss Government through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) is granting a limited number of scholarships to developing countries, among which Indonesia is included.
These scholarships are offered to Indonesian POSTGRADUATE students wishing to study at a Swiss university. The aim of the scholarship is to enable grantees either to further their education or to undertake research work in the fields in which the universities are particularly active. The intended study should be useful for the development in Indonesia. In principle, the scholarship holders can study at any national Swiss university or Federal Institute of Technology. The candidates should take into account the possibilities offered by Swiss universities. Click here to see the list of universities.
Following programs are not included in this scholarship:
1. Fine arts and music
2. Undergraduate studies
3. Hotel management studies
4. Student exchange programs
5. Part-time studies
6. On-the-job studies
7. Correspondence studies
The duration of grant is for the nine-month academic year. Under certain conditions, which are justified by FCS and the related university, the scholarship may be renewed.
Conditions
1. Indonesian citizen
2. University degree ( min. Sarjana Strata-1 or equivalent)
3. Candidates must be under 35 years old when applying (birth date after December 31,
1970)
4. Sufficient knowledge of one of the official languages in Switzerland (i.e. German, French or Italian), depending on the location of chosen university, and English for some courses. Each candidates will have to undergo a language test at the Swiss Embassy in Jakarta in order to determine the oral and written language ability.
Note: It is a general requirement that applicants must have proficient knowledge of one of the official languages spoken in Switzerland. In principle this requirement still applies to applicants with good English abilities and also if the intended study program will be held in English. The applicant should fully benefit from the offered scholarship. Without knowledge of one of the national languages it will be difficult to handle daily situations (foreign police, post office, bank, university life, etc). A qualified applicant whose language proficiency is considered inadequate may still be granted a scholarship. This, however, will be subject to the applicant?s attendance of a special three months? intensive language course at the University of Fribourg. The FCS will also cover the expenses for these courses, which usually start in mid-July.
5. Acceptance letter from the chosen university. Before applying the candidates need to contact the professor or direction of the postgraduate program at the chosen educational institution in order to get a written confirmation of acceptance which must be submitted when filing the application. The request of the acceptance letter must be completed with a detailed and precise plan of the intended postgraduate study program, curriculum vitae and certified copies of the university diplomas (including transcripts). A certified translation is required if the originals are not issued in English, German, French or Italian.
6. Detailed study/research plan describing clearly and precisely the aim of study. The possibilities offered by the Swiss universities should be taken into account, also the possibilities of professional reintegration when returning to Indonesia

If all requirements are fulfilled, the applicant then will be invited to the Embassy to take a written and oral language test, as well as a short personal interview. In May 2006, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) will announce the accepted candidatures.
Scholarship Amount
CHF 1.820,- for post-graduate students
CHF 4.500,- for the three-months language course in Fribourg
Please note that the scholarship recipients are exempt from the general semester fees but NOT for certain postgraduate courses as for example MBA-programms (which can reach thousands of CHF). The grant covers only living expenses in Switzerland.
Travel Expenses and Insurance
Recipients from Indonesia pay their own travel expenses to Switzerland, but the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS) pays the return ticket (except for familiy members). The return travel will not be offered if grantees extend their stay in Switzerland beyond six months after completion of their studies, or if they take up employment or move to a third country.
Health insurance (except for dental care) and accident insurance are provided.
Obligations of a Scholarship Holder
Scholarship holders must live in Switzerland at the study place and must comply with the laws concerning the residence of foreigners in Switzerland and the university regulations. The scholarship holders cannot take family members to Switzerland in the first year of study but they may visit Switzerland on their own costs as a tourist.
When accepting the scholarship, candidates may have to give their written agreement to return to Indonesia after completion of the scholarship in Switzerland.
Scholarships of the FCS cannot be cumulated with other scholarships. If the scholarship holders have another scholarship or another financial support (salary), they are not entitled to be granted a Swiss scholarship.

The Fujitsu Asia Pacific Scholarship (Fujitsu Scholarship) Program, sponsored by Fujitsu Limited , provides financial assistance for postgraduate education and cross-cultural management training to participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Fujitsu Limited, an international leader in information technology, telecommunications, semiconductors and electronics that is headquartered in Tokyo, established the Fujitsu Scholarship to commemorate its 50th anniversary in 1985.
The Fujitsu Scholarship programs are available for academic programs at JAIMS (the Japan-America Institute of Management Science). JAIMS, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a nonprofit postgraduate institute established by Fujitsu in 1972. Participants study the American, Japanese and Chinese cultures and their different approaches to management. Many Fujitsu Scholarship recipients/graduates are now working for corporate and social-service organizations in their home countries as well as in other nations.

[Indonesia] Support Program for Student Research
Integrated Natural Resources Management and Livelihood Paradigms in Recovery from the Tsunami in Aceh/Nias
As part of a grant by the Ford Fondation to the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and cooperating CGIAR centres (World Fish, CIFOR and IPGRI), we have the opportunity to support students (especially from Aceh or Nias) who have advanced plans for thesis research projects.
Criteria of the students’ research:
* Students (undergraduate or post graduate) from Aceh or Nias are the priorities.
* The field research must be conducted in Aceh or Nias
* The research should be relevant to the livelihood or INRM issues
* The research should be relevant to the post-Tsunami recovery
* Students who are intending to continue working in Aceh or Nias after graduation.

The received proposals will be screened by ICRAF with respect to the criteria above and for financial soundness. Required proposals will be funded based on a student attachment contract between ICRAF and the student.
ICRAF will provide:
1. Financial support (based on contract)
2. External advisor (from one of the national or international partners) with inputs and references as needed
3. Opportunity to share research results with potential users so that results contribute the post-Tsunami recovery.

As part of a grant by the Ford Fondation to the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and cooperating CGIAR centres (World Fish, CIFOR and IPGRI), we have the opportunity to support students (especially from Aceh or Nias) who have advanced plans for thesis research projects.
Criteria of the students’ research:
* Students (undergraduate or post graduate) from Aceh or Nias are the priorities.
* The field research must be conducted in Aceh or Nias
* The research should be relevant to the livelihood or INRM issues
* The research should be relevant to the post-Tsunami recovery
* Students who are intending to continue working in Aceh or Nias after graduation.
For students who are interested, please contact us to check on potential topic (click here to check the potential topic) or submit your proposal (in Bahasa Indonesia or English) that is being discussed with research advisory committees.
