Gender and Development Studies with Specialization in
Gender, Environment and Development
at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand

Gender & Development Studies (GDS) at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) is inviting applications for scholarships for Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Gender and Development Studies with specialization in ‘Gender, Environment and Development.’

Eligible applicants should have an educational background in the social sciences or human geography or any of the natural science disciplines as well as career experience in organizations working with programs related to natural resource management or environmental governance for a minimum of three years. They should also be nationals of the following countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippines, East Timor, Cambodia, Lao PDR, China, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan.


The scholarship will cover all school fees, travel to AIT from country of origin through the most economical route available, accommodation and field data collection within the twenty one (21) - month masters’ study program of GDS. It is expected that grant awardees will develop their master’s thesis exploring various themes within the general framework of social and gender analysis on natural environments in the Asian region and with intended relevance to their organizations’ objectives, concerns and scope of work. Some of these research themes could present (but are not limited to) fresh perspectives on the following: gender and social effects of environmental degradation on populations (e.g. health; loss of land rights); the degree of participation of women and men in decision-making on management of resources; mobility patterns of women and men and their effects on rural livelihoods; claim-making on resources and evolving resource conflicts; responses
to state-driven programs on environmental governance; the effects of global markets on local environments and populations, and so on.

Interested applicants should submit the following documents to the AIT Admissions Officer:
(a) A completed application form available online at www.ait.ac.th/AIT/admissions/;
(b) A tentative one-page research abstract for the master’s thesis;
(c) Attested transcript(s) of previous Bachelor’s Degrees;
(d) TOEFEL/IELTS score or evidence of English language proficiency; and
(e) Two (2) recommendation letters

Please indicate that you are applying for a Master’s Degree in GDS with specialization in ‘Gender, Environment and Development’ in your application form for your application to be counted. More general information on admissions procedures is available in the AIT Admissions Office website.

For the First Semester intake of August 2006, a maximum of three awards will be granted on the basis of appropriate career and educational backgrounds as specified above; a research abstract with clearly stated objectives and fresh perspectives offered to the study of social and gender analysis in natural resource management; English language proficiency; hold a Bachelor’s degree from an institution of recognized standing with above average marks, and timely submission of all required documents.

This competitive awards program for post-graduate education at AIT is part of the partnership between GDS/AIT and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada and its umbrella program on social and gender analysis in natural resource management in Asia.

[UK] John Henry Brookes International Scholarships Awarded for Academic Excellence

The Graduate School at Oxford Brookes University is pleased to offer the following scholarships for international students wishing to undertake full-time taught postgraduate master`s degrees in September 2006.

Scholarships will be awarded for academic excellence and each award will be paid towards the full-time international tuition fee for a taught master`s degree. These scholarships do not include a maintenance grant.


The Graduate Office must receive scholarship applications from candidates by 1 June 2006. Late applications will not be accepted.

Who is eligible?

- You should have or expect to have a good honours degree or equivalent from a recognised institution of higher education, or have experience which demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard.
- Candidates receiving awards from other sources of funding which cover all their tuition fees will not be eligible for a taught postgraduate scholarship; eligibility is not affected by funding covering maintenance costs.
- You must have accepted a place on a master`s course at Oxford Brookes University and have paid the required deposit.
- You must meet the University`s English language requirements or be accepted on the University`s pre-sessional English language course.

[Asia] The Luisa Mallari Fellowships for M.A./Ph.D. Research in Southeast Asian Studies

Deadline of applications: 2 October 2006

The fellowship aims to encourage the study of a Southeast Asian country other than one`s own or a comparative study across the region by master`s and doctoral students. The program supports course work and/or thesis research (documentary research and field work) and thesis writing. In highly meritorious cases, the fellowship may also support full Ph.D. study.


Eligible to apply:

- Southeast Asian nationals, including East Timorese, under the age of 40 and enrolled in social science or humanities graduate programs in a Southeast Asian university.


- Applicants may apply for grants to carry out research for an M.A. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation. In the case of the doctoral program, the research proposal must have been accepted by the applicant`s faculty/department prior to the application for the grant, and proof of that acceptance must be attached to the application.

- In highly meritorious cases, a grant may be made available to support full Ph.D. study of a Southeast Asian student in a Southeast Asian university (outside one`s country). The grant may be renewed annually depending on the student`s performance up to a maximum of three years. The applicant should have a master`s degree in the humanities and social sciences.

- In addition, doctoral students who are developing a dissertation research proposal may request funds to carry out preliminary field or library research leading to a formal research proposal (pre-dissertation grants). In this case, the applicant must have fulfilled all the requirements of his/her faculty/department/university prior to entering the dissertation stage.

- Research projects must be related to the theme of the program and must include library research or fieldwork in the country or countries being studied. The research findings must be used in the preparation of an M.A. thesis or a Ph.D. dissertation.

- Ongoing projects fall within the scope of the program, but projects which have been completed will not be considered.

[Australia] The Endeavour Executive Awards Scholarships

Overview

The Endeavour Executive Awards aim to:

- Enable high achieving professionals to further develop their skills and knowledge;
- Deepen professional engagements between Australia and participating countries;
- Strengthen mutual understanding between the people of Australia and participating countries; and
- Build linkages and networks between Australia and participating countries.

Award Description

The Endeavour Executive Awards are two-way, providing professional development opportunities for high achievers in business, industry, education or government from participating countries - e.g. secondary school principals working side by side with their colleagues in counterpart schools. They allow professionals the opportunity, on returning home, to share their updated skills and knowledge with colleagues. They will also establish ongoing linkages and networks.


Along with applications from individuals, DEST will accept nominations from organisations for one or more people to be considered for an Endeavour Executive Award.

The Endeavour programme will fund over 830 Endeavour Executive Awards over the five years 2007 to 2011.

Number of awards

- Up to 92 awards will be offered in 2007:
- up to 41 awards to professionals coming to Australia; and
- up to 51 awards to Australian professionals.

The awards will be allocated from the total pool of applicants from the participating countries.

Participating countries

Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (including Hong Kong and Macau SARs), Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kiribati, Laos, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Nauru, Nepal, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South), Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Turkey, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Wallis and Futuna, and Yemen.

Value of awards

Up to A$25,000, with stipend paid monthly on a pro-rata basis. Benefits include:
- a travel allowance of A$5,000;
- an establishment allowance of A$5,000; and
- a monthly stipend of A$3,750 for up to four months.
Funds are not available to support accompanying dependants.

Award duration

Awards are for one to four months' duration.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an award, Applicants must:

- be citizens or permanent residents of one of the participating countries, and physically resident in that country at time of application (Applicants, or those nominated, who hold dual citizenship with the intended host country are ineligible for an award, as one of the main objectives of the Endeavour Programme is to provide an international experience to those who may not otherwise have had that opportunity);

- have at least an undergraduate degree; and

- demonstrate English language proficiency by either having:

- completed university study conducted in English in one of the following countries:

American Samoa, Australia, Canada, Fiji, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, United Kingdom (including Northern Ireland), United States of America or Zambia; or

- providing a letter of support from an Education, Science and Training Counsellor representing the Australian Government. The letter of support may be obtained by contacting a Counsellor (in person or via telephone) and undergoing a brief interview. A list of Counsellors is available here.

Selection criteria

In evaluating applications/nominations, the following criteria will be applied:

- high-level academic achievement, and/or at least five (5) years relevant work experience;
- a well thought out statement describing the benefits of undertaking the chosen professional development that, ideally, is relevant to the applicant’s needs and interests and those of the applicant's home country;
- demonstrated progress towards arranging a suitable programme of professional development in host country;
- the applicant’s or nominated candidates’ potential to participate at a high level in their profession or the wider community on their return home from abroad; and
- the potential for ongoing links between the host and home organisations.

Selection process

Applications are first reviewed to determine whether they meet the eligibility requirements. A selection panel will consider eligible applications and make recommendations to DEST for final approval.

Feedback concerning unsuccessful applications

DEST will not provide feedback as to why applicants or nominations were not selected. The final selection and procedures to achieve the outcome are at the discretion of the selection panel and DEST, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Application / nomination process

Read the following instructions carefully before commencing, in particular:

- establish your eligibility;
- understand the conditions of the award;
- ensure that your application is accurate and complete; and
- restrict your answers to the given length.

Applications will be received electronically by DEST and a selection panel will consider the applications. Applicants who are unable to submit their application electronically will be able to submit an application by post. Along with applications from individual applicants, DEST will accept nominations from organisations for one or more people. In addition to the application form, applicants are required to submit the following supporting documentation:

Signed statutory declaration stating that all information contained in the application/nomination and supporting documentation is true and correct. Note that:
the application/nomination is being made to a Commonwealth entity, the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), for a benefit, and
giving false or misleading information is a serious offence under the Criminal Code

A certified copy of current passport/s or other approved equivalent documentation showing evidence of citizenship or permanent residence. This must be authorised or stamped “True copy of the original” by a personal agency recognised by law of the home country. An officer of an Australian consulate is also suitable for these purposes;

Proof of English language proficiency. This must be either evidence of having completed university study conducted in English in one of the following countries:

Academic record/s, carrying the endorsement from the education institution, showing the subjects and standard of pass with each, with an explanation of the marking system. An officer of an Australian consulate is also suitable for these purposes;

Three referees’ reports using the form provided and an English translation if required. The English translation must be authorised or stamped “True copy of the original” by a personal agency recognised by the law of your home country. The Referee Reports can be faxed by the referee directly to DEST or returned to you to be submitted with the other supporting documentation;

Evidence of support for your affiliation from the host organisation. This may be in the form of communication with your proposed host organisation or acceptance of affiliation with your host organisation.

Employment record (C.V) for the past five (5) years;

Nomination Form (if being nominated for the award by your home organisation).
Complete the application checklist included at the end of the application form to ensure that your application is complete. Ineligible applications will not be considered and an incomplete application will disadvantage applicants. DEST will not follow up with applicants any missing documentation.

Scholarship opportunities for LLM in Mineral Law and Policy

Six Rio Tinto Chevening Scholarships for the one-year full-time LL.M in Mineral Law and Policy at University of Dundee's Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law & Policy (CEPMLP) are now being offered for the academic year starting September 2006.

The scholarships are part funded by Rio Tinto plc, the Foreign Commonwealth Office and CEPMLP. Covering tuition fees and living expenses they also provide successful candidates with an enviable opportunity to study at CEPMLP, the internationally renowned centre for excellence in natural resources law, management and business transactions.


The LL.M in combines key aspects of law, policy, economics, finance and management involved in international mining investment and development from both an international and comparative standpoint. The programme provides students with the necessary skills to meet the challenges that exploration and mine development involves and its contribution to sustainable development.

[UK] Faculty of Engineering International MSc(Eng) Scholarships University of Liverpool

A number of Faculty of Engineering International MSc(Eng) Scholarships are available for academically strong International students who wish to pursue full-time studies leading towards the award of an MSc(Eng) degree in engineering at the University of Liverpool. The amount offered by each scholarship is £1,000.

Only high calibre International applicants who meet the conditions specified below will be considered for a scholarship. Successful applicants for the scholarship will be notified in writing shortly after proof of their qualifications have been received.


Scholarship Terms and Conditions
- Scholarships are for international students who start their studies in September 2006 and pay the full overseas tuition fees (£10500 in 2005/06; slightly higher for 2006/07).
- A completed scholarship application form must arrive at the address indicated on the form no later than 30 July 2006.
- Candidates must achieve a good first class honours degree or an equivalent overseas qualification in a relevant subject area (engineering or scientific subjects) and the application must be supported by good references. The grades required for the award of a scholarship may vary depending on the MSc(Eng) programme.
- Candidates whose first degree is not from an English speaking country must also obtain one of the following (other equivalent qualifications may be considered):
(i) paper based TOEFL 570 plus Test of Written English 5.0
(ii) computer based TOEFL 230
(iii) IELTS 6.0
- Successful registered candidates will receive £400 around week four of the first semester, a further £400 after completion of the second semester examinations with minimum overall grade ‘B’ (i.e. ≥ 60% average) and £200 on obtaining a minimum grade ‘B’ in the MSc(Eng) dissertation.
- Scholarships awarded for September 2006 entry are not deferrable to the following year.
- The decisions made by the scholarship awarding body in each Department will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

[UK] Centre for Business Management Scholarships at Queen Mary, University of London

Centre for Business Management Scholarships (MA International Management) Queen Mary`s Centre for Business Management is delighted to announce the availability of 5 scholarships worth up to £2,000 for international students studying on the MA International Management course. This course provides an intensive and stimulating learning experience focusing on international management, cross-national differences and global issues in international business.

In addition to the above, please note that the Centre of Business Management is offering a free four week English Language Pre-sessional prior to attending the course to all those currently holding an offer. [Germany] MBA Scholarship Program at Fachhochschule Coburg

The Master of Business Administration program at Fachhochschule Coburg, University of applied sciences, has launched in the winter term of 2001/2002.

According to the regulations of the State of Bavaria there will be a tuition fee of 300 Euro for Summer Term 2007. For Winter Term 2007/2008 400 Euro and then 500 Euro for each semester. The internship semester will be tuition free. Therefore, a student starting Winter Term 2006/2007 and completing the study program within 2 years will have to pay a total tuition of 800 Euro for the entire program.


Financial Management is a 2 year (4 semester) postgraduate program with the degree of a Master of Business Administration (MBA). A job integrated part time program is also possible. In this case lectures are held on afternoon / evening and weekends with the combination of a 3-week-day-model and block model. The part time program spans over three years (6 semester).

Financial Management centers around the fundamental principles of Finance, Accounting and Budgetary Control.

The role of money and financial markets, financial analysis, the function of investment markets and decision-making techniques (including behavioral and information management tools) necessary for effective management of a company´s resources will be examined.

Financial Management is discussed in an international context, but a special focus will also be given to the enlarged European Union of the coming years, i.e. countries like Poland, Hungary and other eastern states.

The growing number of medium sized companies with an increasing international business and their corresponding problems is a further element of the program.
The language of instruction is English in the first year and German and English during the second year. German language courses are offered at various levels.
