[Global] Rotary Centers for International Studies

Working Toward . . .

Mediation, conflict resolution, and peace where there is war,
understanding where there is disharmony,
food security where there is hunger,
health care where there is disease,
education where there is illiteracy,
conservation where there is environmental degradation,
sustainable economic development where there is poverty.

Share the Vision

The Rotary Foundation has partnered with eight leading universities around the world to establish the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution. Each year, Rotary will select up to 70 scholars to study at one of the seven Rotary Centers worldwide. The selected Rotary World Peace Scholars will begin two-year master's-level degree programs in conflict resolution, peace studies, and international relations. Each Rotary district may nominate one candidate for the selection process. The inaugural class of Rotary World Peace Scholars will graduate in 2004.

Program Objectives

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International has established the Rotary Centers for International Studies:
  • to advance research, teaching, publication, and knowledge of issues of peace and goodwill, causes of conflict, and world understanding;
  • to provide advanced educational opportunities for a group of Rotary World Peace Scholars chosen from various countries and cultures in order to advance knowledge and world understanding among potential future leaders of government, business, education, media, and other professions;
  • to establish a program through which The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and the member clubs of Rotary International may become increasingly effective in promoting greater tolerance and cooperation among peoples, leading to world peace and understanding.

Rotary World Peace Scholarship Funding

The Rotary World Peace Scholarship supports the Rotary World Peace Scholar for a two-year master's-level degree program at one of the Rotary Centers for International Studies. Scholarships cover a 21-month period. This period includes two academic years as well as the three-month summer break between academic-year periods. Scholars are encouraged to pursue degree-related activities during their summer breaks, such as internships, volunteer work, and research.

The scholarship will include funding for:

  • Tuition and fees: university registration fees, tuition for a typical course load for the two-year degree program, and all other fees required by the university.
  • Room and board: a monthly stipend for 21 months of room and board based on the reasonable cost of student living in the study area. The Rotary Foundation will determine monthly stipends in consultation with the University Partners.
  • Transportation: round-trip transportation between the scholar's home and study cities at the start and end of the scholarship period.
  • Contingency expenses: a stipend to cover the cost of books and supplies, thesis costs, costs associated with service obligations, and other unanticipated costs. Contingency funds will be provided at the beginning of each academic year during the two-year scholarship period.
  • Summer funding: Limited summer funding is available to scholars to support degree-related projects such as internships, volunteer work, and research. Scholars apply for summer funding during the first academic year of the scholarship period.

Scholars are responsible for securing funds to cover any expenses not specifically covered in the categories listed above. Only scholarship recipients may use scholarship funds. Spouses and dependents may accompany scholars on their study programs, but The Rotary Foundation will not provide funding for anyone other than the scholar.
